Varsity Baseball defeats Sabres 7-3 to claim first BT Baseball Conference Championship

Starting pitcher Aaron Gillette threw a complete game, scored two runs, and hit a huge triple, leading the Beth Tfiloh Warriors Varsity Baseball team to its first ever Conference Championship. Gillette's triple started the Warriors' best rally of the game, and he later came through on defense by grabbing a hard hit line drive right back at the mound.
There was no shortage of other heroes in BT's 7-3 victory over Sts. Peter & Paul, as the Warriors excelled both at the plate and in the field. Freshman third baseman Josh Flax initiated a 5-4-3 double play to silence a Sabres' rally and went 3-for-4 at the dish with a double, 2 RBIs, and a run scored. Arky Staiman made 3 huge plays at shortstop throwing runners out at first and showed great patience at the plate to earn a rally-sustaining, bases loaded walk that plated a run. Jeremy Zuckerberg came through with a clutch RBI double and tagged out a runner at second base, receiving a bloody leg in the process. Jon Hornstein and Jeremy Schmerling both made big contributions as first basemen; Hornstein drove in a pair of runs with a timely single, and Schmerling threw out a runner at the plate with the bases loaded. Catcher Ben Rank made that force out and also threw out a runner trying to steal second. The outfield was patrolled by Jeremy Hurewitz, Jon Jacobson, David Schwartz, and Mike Becker, all of whom used their speed and alertness to prevent any big rallies by Sts. Peter & Paul.
Coach Green called the championship victory "the Warriors' most balanced victory with timely hitting, strong defense, and stellar pitching." The Warriors led 6-0 after 5 innings, but Sts. Peter & Paul put together a little rally in the 6th to make it 6-3. After tacking on an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th to make it 7-3, the Warriors set out to put the game on ice. In the top of the 7th inning, the first Sabres' hitter reached base but was thrown out stealing. To end the game, Gillette forced the final batter to strike out swinging, triggering a wild celebration for the historic BT baseball championship!
